Capped Oil Well Finally Offers Hope

Capped Oil Well Finally Offers Hope
BP announces that the flow of oil has been stopped, for now
BY ALEXANDRA DIPALMA

After 85 days, British Petroleum (BP) has managed to stop the flow of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. A tight-fitting cap was lowered onto the well last week. The cap, a stack of pipes and valves, weighs 75 tons—more than the weight of 18 elephants. On Thursday afternoon, the last of the cap's valves was closed, and the gushing oil was stopped.
"It's a great sight," said BP Chief Operating Officer Doug Settles. But the catastrophe is not over. "It's far from the finish line," Settles warned. "It's not the time to celebrate."
Temporary Solution
After trying everything from robotics to stuffing the leak with mud and golf balls, the sealing cap system is the first successful measure in a series of failed attempts to contain the oil.
In the hours since the flow of oil has stopped, BP has kept a close eye on the sealed well. BP senior vice-president Kent Wells said that test results have been positive. Four underwater robots searching the sea floor have found no signs of new leaks.
Scientists will continue to study pressure readings from the cap. So far, the pressure has continued to rise inside the cap, indicating that the oil is being contained rather than leaking out from somewhere else.
Far from Over
While the success of the sealing cap system is encouraging, it was "just one step in a multistep process," said Wells. Since May 2, BP had been drilling two relief wells that are expected to permanently stop the flow of oil. The drilling has been put on hold to avoid complications, but there are plans to start again soon.
The relief wells are intended to stop the gushing oil for good. They will plug the original leak and then be pumped full of mud and cement to permanently seal it. BP officials say that the relief wells will not be complete until mid-August.
In the Rose Garden on Friday, President Obama said that the capped oil well is good news, but cautioned the public to stay alert. "Everybody feels like we're done, and we're not," he said. "I don't want us to get too far ahead of ourselves."
Max- Oil leaks are bad for the marine mammals, and the oil leak has continued for almost 3 months! There may be about hundreds of thousands of gallons of oil has leaked to the sea. But it finally stopped for using some other big things, and it solved the problem! Maybe the cap’s pressure will be too big for the gushing oil, and will break and let the oil keep gushing. So it’s not to the finish yet! A few weeks later, the USA will have a permanent cap to seal the oil, and the old cap will be removed. After the oil stopped gushing, the cap had been normal and no leaks were found. So the USA can relax because the oil leaks had stopped! From sealing the leak with some small things, to using some things that are very big, they finally made it. But I still think this leaking time is too long, so next time when they have another oil leak, maybe they can use this way faster, or not, they need to think of another way! I think the BP must think of another way to avoid oil leaks and stop them quickly, so they can protect marine life.

Shark sightings increase close to Kenting

Shark sightings increase close to Kenting

By Tsai Tsung-hsien

STAFF REPORTER

Saturday, Jul 10, 2010, Page 1

Visitors to Kenting and areas along the west coast of the nation are being cautioned about the threat of shark attack, as biologists have detected bull sharks near Checheng (車城), Pintung County, over the past two months.

Hsu Hua-hsun (徐華遜) of National Taiwan Oceanic University said bull sharks are one of three aggressive types of sharks in the world, along with the great white and tiger sharks.

Bull sharks can grow up to 3m in length, weigh more than 300kg, and have a fierce nature, Hsu said.

While bull sharks attacks have been recorded in other countries, they are rarely seen in Taiwan, Hsu said. Only four to five bull sharks were seen near the coast last year, mostly along the east coast.

Marine biologist Wang Kai-ting (王凱霆) said that bull sharks usually linger around estuaries or seaports, which means people are more likely to see them than other types of aggressive sharks. They are also involved in many of the reported shark attacks around the world, Wang said.

However, the recent reports of bull sharks near Taiwan were close to shore in the Kenting area, about 20km from Nanwan (南灣).

A fisherman nicknamed “A Fong” (阿風) said he first saw a bull shark last month after he had become trapped in one of his underwater nets. The 167kg-shark was found dead in the net.

“I discovered my nets had been damaged. At first I thought the damage had been caused by other fishermen, but it seemed to be caused by other creatures,” he said. “Later I heard from scuba divers that they had seen sharks, and about a week later, I found another shark trapped and dead in my net. That one weighed 326kg.”

The Kenting National Park Administration said its records show that fishermen have caught bull sharks in the open sea in the past, but it has no reports of sharks coming close to the beach. Nevertheless, it said it would keep a close watch along the coast.

People can report shark sightings by calling (08) 886-1321.

Unlike Australia and South Africa, few beaches in Taiwan are equipped with shark nets. The nation also lacks coastal observers and shark-alert mechanisms to protect the swimmers.

Marine scientists say they would like to determine if the increase in shark sightings is a consequence of climate change or a sign the sharks’ natural habitat is under threat.

Max-Pingtung’s sea is dangerous now, because for an unknown reason, bull sharks are now close from Kenting. Dangerous bull sharks are really big, even there are just a few sharks in the Kenting sea, but still, it might occur a shark attack. I know when a shark attacks us humans; it may bite off an arm, a leg, or even attacks our body parts. This can be deadly, but doctors can attach your arm or leg back, and be safe (the chance is low).

We may protect ourselves from shark attacks, like don’t go to places that sharks live, and stay away from deep places.

An “Octopus” Star in World Cup

An “Octopus” Star in World Cup

2010 FIFA World Cup ended with a great ending on yesterday, and this time’s winner is Spain, which never got the champion in the cup. Spain, only losing one match in this world cup (6 wins and 1 loss) beat Holland in the finals, by scoring at the 116th minute.

But this time, octopus “Paul” used his power to predict who would win in some matches. He predicted 8 games, from the 1st round to the final- and guessed it all right! This took him a long time, and a lot of energy. He has a special power that other octopuses don’t have; even they have the same body parts.

Also, Paul’s predicting also made some countries mad too. Like Argentina and Holland, fans and other people want to kill Paul and eat him, and fans in other places want to buy him. But, he is already 2 and half years old, and definitely can’t go for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, because octopuses can only live for 3-4 years old. So he is going to retire and find another ancestor, and have good memories in this World Cup.

Justin Friedlander, 13, aims to raise money for brain-tumor research by shooting 63,000 free throws

By Steve Schmidt

How long would it take someone to make 63,000 free throws? Justin Friedlander, of Rockville, Maryland, is trying to find out—with a little help from his family, friends, neighbors and even a few big-time athletes.

Why 63,000, you ask? That's how many people are diagnosed with a primary brain tumor each year. Unfortunately in March of 2009, 13-year-old Justin was one of them. He has what is known as an inoperable brain tumor, meaning at this time, there is no surgery or other form of cure.

After receiving the news, Justin and his family decided to team up with the National Brain Tumor Society to start a program called "Justin's Quest." Its purpose: to raise awareness of brain tumors and to raise money for research by having people shoot free throws with Justin. "You want to make the most of a every day because you don't know what tomorrow is going to bring," Justin said.

Having a Ball

On June 23, Justin headed to Madison Square Garden in New York City for the NBA FIT clinic to continue to reach his goal. He started the day with more than 14,000 made baskets. After the event was over, 519 more baskets were added to the total.

Some of those baskets were made by future top draft picks such as John Wall, Luke Babbitt and Gordon Hayward, who manned the free-throw shooting station during the clinic. Although the players looked like skyscrapers on the court compared to Justin, who is 4-foot-7, they all looked up to him in admiration. "That's unbelievable what he's doing," Babbitt said in between a pair of successful free throws.

"I know at that age I probably wouldn't have thought of something like that," Greg Monroe added.

Participants can shoot the free throws with Justin in-person if they live in the Washington, D.C. area or they can send a video or a photo of free throws being made to Justin's website, justinsquest.com. He has shot free throws with at least 50 people so far since the program began last November, including 14-time Olympic swimming champion Michael Phelps.

"I think that I'm really going to make a difference," Justin said. "And I really truly feel that I'm going to find a cure for brain tumors and it's just been a pleasure. I'd like to thank the NBA. They've been great. All the draft picks, they've been fantastic."

Net Gains

The day ended with Justin being presented a basketball signed by the future NBA draft picks and another ball with the signature of President Barack Obama. He also received a bag full of NBA merchandise.

"All of this is just mind blowing for this to be snowballing into making a difference," said Justin's father, Jon. "And we will make a difference and help raise awareness and hopefully find a cure for this disease."

So far, more than $38,000 has been raised through the initiative. The goal is to raise $250,000 with every bit of going to the society for tumor-based research.

Max (Hoops for Hope) –I know that many people do some unbelievable things to let people fund raise. Like riding bikes, climbing mountains and other stuff, to save more money and give it to charity. By shooting 63,000 baskets, this challenge is maybe too crazy for a 13-year old, but he going to let us raise money and help brain tumor patients. Even we think this challenge is impossible, they have the heart to do it and make the quest, and want to help those patients!

A heat wave breaks records on the East Coast

By Jared T. Miller

President Barack Obama's speeches often spark debate across the nation. But nobody could disagree with the words the Commander in Chief spoke to reporters on Tuesday: "Stay cool out there. Hydrate."

The President gave that advice to reporters leaving the Oval Office in Washington, D.C. The nation's capital is in the midst of a heat wave that is scorching the East Coast. On Tuesday, temperatures topped 100°F from Virginia all the way to Massachusetts, and turned an otherwise relaxing summer into a rush to beat the heat.

Heated Issues

"Man, this stinks," said 14-year-old Miguel Pena, as he rode his bike in New York City. "We just got out of school and this is supposed to be when we have fun, but this is too much." Temperatures on Tuesday prompted the National Weather Service to issue heat advisories until Wednesday night. Several commuter train companies slowed their trains to avoid damaging the rails in the severe heat.

By Wednesday, the heat was more than a small inconvenience. New York's utility company Consolidated Edison reported that it was trying to restore power to the 18,700 outages customers reported a day earlier. Power outages climbed into the thousands across New Jersey and Washington, D.C. Nursing homes in New Jersey and Baltimore experienced problems with power and air conditioning, and in some cases, had to evacuate patients. In Rhode Island and other areas, an increased need for water led to a ban on water-usage outdoors.

Cool Solutions

A period of hot weather is labeled a "heat wave" when temperatures rise above 90°F for more than three consecutive days. That has been true for many states on the East Coast, with temperatures in Newark, New Jersey, remaining in the triple digits the entire time. Tuesday's record highs of 103°F in New York City and 102°F in Philadelphia broke temperature records set in 1999 in the two cities.

But individuals are working to keep things cool despite the heat. At the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine, New Jersey, workers prepared tubs of ice cubes to keep four sick seals comfortable. The Long Island, New York, branch of the Red Cross said local businesses would help give free bottled water to day laborers working outside.

The National Weather service said the heat wave would remain for the majority of this week. Relief is expected to come soon in the form of a cool weather system coming off of the Atlantic Ocean. In the meantime, it's best to heed the President's advice: Stay cool and drink plenty of water.

Max (Hot Stuff) -The earth is getting hot in July, and the whole world(some countries)break the temperature record. In Beijing, China, it broke to 40 degrees, even pandas and apes are eating ice, tires stuck on the road, and can cook fried eggs in the road (because the road is 68.3 degrees)! And in Iran and India, it even broke to 52 degrees! Also, many people died of the “hot stuff”, more water usage, and more opening air conditioner. So it is very bad to be too hot, and it isn’t good for us.

Fourteen-year-old Anamika Veeramani wins the 83rd annual Scripps National Spelling Bee

By Andrea Delbanco

Stromuhr. Most people don't know what the medical word means, or how to pronounce it. But Anamika Veeramani, a 14-year-old from North Royalton, Ohio, knew how to spell it. The challenging word won Anamika a trophy and more than $40,000 in cash and prizes at the 83rd annual Scripps National Spelling Bee on Friday. Three spellers tied for second place.

A total of 273 spellers took part in the three-day competition, held in Washington, D.C. Contestants ranged in age from 8 to 15. The final rounds aired on ABC on Friday night.

V-I-C-T-O-R-Y

Anamika tied for fifth place at the Scripps Bee in 2009 and was one of the favorites at the competition this year. Anamika sat through a tense commercial break before she got the chance to spell the winning word. She kept her cool, standing still with her hands behind her back, waiting to smile until the trophy was presented to her. "I usually have a poker face," says Anamika. But she admits the spelling was stressful, and winning was surreal. "It was just really nerve-wracking," she said. "The commercial breaks didn't really help."

"This has been her dream for a very, very long time," says Anamika's father, Alagaiya Veeramani. He says his daughter studied spelling for as much as 16 hours on some days. Now, having won the top spot at Scripps, Anamika can no longer spell competitively. "I've been doing spelling for such a long time," Anamika says. "It's kind of sad." She says she wants to spend more time golfing, dancing and writing.

A Winning Streak

Anamika is the third Indian-American champion in a row. Although Indian-Americans make up less than one percent of the population of the United States, they have an impressive winning streak at spelling bees. Indian-Americans have won the top spot at Scripps in eight of the last 12 years.

"All of the past champions inspire me," Anamika says. "They're all amazing people."

Max-Spelling Bee is a great game to play, and tests players’ word spelling. This game may have a race, or you can play it yourself. Spelling Bee is one of those popular contests, and many kids to teens join the race. Spelling contests have many rounds-from about a hundred or more contestants join the first round, to the final round with only a few contestants. This game is also exciting, but also gives stress to the contestants, because if they spell wrong one word, they’re out of the contest! So maybe the contest will be splendid to watch if this contains a lot of geniuses. I know Spelling Bee contests tests not only regular words, it also tests geography! But I know, Spelling Bee Geography tests are as hard as Spelling Bee. We may also want to know what questions it will ask. As Spelling Bee, they will ask words which can’t find in the dictionary. At Geography Spelling Bee, they would ask some peculiar places, seas or some spots. Also, a great prize will be awarded for the winner of Spelling Bee. Don’t just know the race is hard, the contestants may take a few months to practice, and sometimes can’t get the champion!

Ghana Knocks Out the U.S. in Overtime

Ghana Knocks Out the U.S. in Overtime

For the second straight World Cup, Ghana eliminates the U.S. with a 2-1 victory

By Alexandra DiPalma

The exciting run of the United States team at the World Cup ended on Saturday when Ghana posted a 2-1 victory in South Africa's Royal Bafokeng Stadium. Asamoah "Little Jet" Gyan of Ghana scored during the third minute of overtime, eliminating the U.S. team in their fourth game of the tournament.

"A stinging, tough defeat," said Bob Bradley, the U.S. coach. "It's a feeling of disappointment for the team and also all our fans."

Falling Behind

While the Americans came from behind to draw England 1-1 and Slovenia 2-2 in the first round, they were unable to push through to the semifinals. The national team from Ghana eliminated the U.S. for the second straight World Cup. The last one took place at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Kevin-Prince Boateng set the tone for the match, putting Ghana ahead only five minutes into the game. The early lead proved too much for the talented U.S. team to overcome.

"We felt like we had a great opportunity," said U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard. "We just gave ourselves too much of a mountain to climb. We just couldn't come back."

It took until the 62nd minute of the game for the U.S. team to catch up again. Landon Donovan, the 28-year-old star who scored the game-winning goal against Algeria, tied the match with a penalty kick.

Over in Overtime

At the end of 90 minutes with a score of 1-1, the U.S. prepared for its first-ever extra time period at the World Cup. "Little Jet" Gyan scored over goalkeeper Howard from 16 yards, sealing Ghana's victory. Despite efforts of the U.S. team, the final whistle marked their elimination.

"Soccer can be a cruel game," said Donovan. "Sometimes you're at the top and sometimes you are at the bottom of the mountain."

Ghana will advance to the quarterfinals and is scheduled to face Uruguay on July 2 in Johannesburg. Germany, Argentina and the Netherlands will also compete in the quarterfinals, along with three other teams that are yet to be determined.

Max-2010 FIFA world cup is known the entire world. 32 teams from the world compete for the champion, and it is a great honor to win the race. Fans from the entire world wish their team going all the way to win this championship, but it takes very much races, compete with other countries, and may be eliminated by just losing one race.

Still, every game is very brilliant, many people score, many people cheer, but also some are angry at the players. North Korea lost very miserable, by losing Portugal by 0-7. America got to top 16 by a “hat trick” on overtime. The coach leading South Korea got 300 million won by going to the top 16. But the worst in the championship is France, when the coach is yelling at the players by not playing well. Even there are many good and bad memories in the championship, there still may have a lots of great soccer games.

The championship is starting top 8 from today. Only Spain, Germany, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina, Ghana and Holland are left, and when they lose one game, they would be eliminated. A few days after, there would be the final, and we would know who would win. It’s exciting!
