A Massive Earthquake Rocks Chile
The South American nation responds to a devastating quake
By Suzanne Zimbler
Early on Saturday morning, one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded tore through central Chile. The powerful quake killed more than 700 people, destroyed or badly damaged 1.5 million homes and affected almost 2 million people. "We are confronting an emergency without parallel in Chile's history," said Chile's President, Michelle Bachelet.
A Shake Felt All Over the Country
The 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck around 3:34 a.m., jolting people awake all over the country. The earthquake originated underwater, off the coast of Chile. The epicenter, or point where the quake started, was 70 miles northeast of Concepcion, the country's second-largest city.
Fernando Abarzua was in one of the many buildings that collapsed there. "I was on the eighth floor and all of a sudden I was down here," he said, adding that he was surprised to have escaped with no major injuries.
The capital city of Santiago, located 200 miles southwest of the earthquake's epicenter, was also affected. An art museum there was badly damaged, a bridge collapsed and a two-story parking lot fell flat, smashing about 50 cars.
The earthquake triggered a tsunami (soo-nah-mee) that swept across the Pacific Ocean, setting off warnings in 53 countries. In Japan and Hawaii, thousands of people evacuated beaches, fearing giant waves. In the end, the tsunami's waves caused major damage and several deaths in Chile but nowhere else.
Dozens of aftershocks, or smaller earthquakes, rattled the area in the days following Saturday's massive quake. Powerful aftershocks were still being recorded Monday, a few as high as magnitude 5.3.
A History of Earthquakes
Chile has a history of earthquakes. The largest recorded earthquake in the world—a 9.5-magnitude quake—struck the country in May 1960. Since 1973, there have been 13 quakes there with a magnitude of at least 7.0. As a result, Chile's newer buildings were constructed to help withstand the shocks.
That is one reason that Chile's quake—though 500 times stronger—has caused much less damage than the earthquake that struck Haiti in January.
Help on the Way
On Sunday, Bachelet ordered troops in Chile to help deliver food, water and blankets and to clear rubble from the roads. Temporary hospitals were planned for the hardest-hit areas.
She later requested help from the international community. On Monday, the United Nations prepared to send 45 satellite phones for officials coordinating earthquake relief efforts as well as 30 tons of food and other aid.
Even before Bachelet's request, President Obama announced that the U.S. was prepared to help. "The United States stands ready to assist in the rescue and recovery efforts," he said.
This is a big earthquake! This earthquake shaked Chile and many people die!, This earthquake even had a tsunami and it went for places like Hong Kong and Japan. But this is not too dangerous than the Haiti earthquake. Lots and lots of big quakes happen in the world often!

951027-7th Birthday
Sunday, October 27, 2005
Today was my birthday.
This evening we went to “Smokey Joe”. We went to 2nd floor and there were no people on 2nd floor.
That looked excited. We ordered some fried lobster loops and spaghetti and hot pot. Grandma and Michael got the same. Then we ate together. After dinner, I bought a cup of chocolate mousse and Michael bought cheese cake with blueberry sauce. The dinner cost NT$1880 include tax.
At home, we opened the box. Michael didn’t like blueberry sauce. Mum came over and added blueberry sauce on my chocolate mousse. That looked delicious. Everyone said, “Happy Birthday to you”. And I said, ”Thank you”.

Global Warming

Global Warming is a very bad thing for us and the world now. Temperatures are rising higher and higher. Now, scientists are discovering ways to stop global warming.
We have to do some things to stop global warming too. Just like riding bicycles to work is an example. Sitting on a bus or driving a car with many people is an example too. Always turn off the lights if you don’t need them. Set the temperatures high if you want to turn on an air conditioner. Recycle cans and bottles would be a good way too. On April 22nd, there will be an Earth Hour. More than 100 countries joined it. After turning off the lights for one hour, the carbon dioxide left can plant 170,000 trees!
Imagine if the scientists didn’t discover global warming, what will happen to our lives now? A few years later, many plants and animals will become extinct. That time, we don’t feed enough food for the people. And, if the polar ice cap melts, the sea level will rise 5000 feet! That can drown the Empire State Building, and Taipei 101! So, if you don’t want to be drowned, you must go to Mount Everest. Also remember, the hurricanes, the blizzards and the tornados will become stronger if the temperatures rise.
Our world’s population is a problem too. In the 1910s, the world population was only 100,000,000. Now, the world‘s population is 6,000,000,000! Scientists said if it keeps going up, at the 22nd century, the world’s population will be over 10,000,000,000! That time, each person will eat less and less food!
Scientists first said at 2060, the polar ice cap will all melt. Then scientists said that 2012, the polar ice cap will all melt. But it keeps getting worse! Scientists said at September 2008, the polar ice cap will all melt!
So, if you want to stop the temperature from rising, just reduce the carbon dioxide. Come on, people, let’s save the earth!
Interesting Facts:
1. From 2063, if you put a large ice cube in the ocean, you will save the earth! (Sure, you need to put larger and larger ice cubes because it melts faster and faster!)
2. If you put an A+ battery in soil, 1 acre of soil will be unusable.
3. The ten hottest years all occurred in the in the last 13 years.
4. If the carbon dioxide increases, the temperatures will get higher!

970701-970703 A trip to Liouciou
Day 1
Tuesday, July 1st, 2008
Today we ate our lunch and went to grandma’s house to pick our grandmother. We went to Donggang to take the 2:00 boat. Inside the boat, the boat goes up and down, so I feel a little bit dizzy. And my grandmother’s baby was crying. Half an hour later, we arrived to Liouciou and rented 2 motorcycles. We drove to our home. It is a one story building and nobody always lives in it. So after we arrived, we started to clean it. In the rooms I saw ants, flies, and centipedes. After we cleaned the house, we went to the beach. At the beach, we first picked seashells. Then I saw some people jump in the water. Mom told me to learn them. So I started jumping in the water. I jumped about fifty times. Playing in the water lets me fun because I can jump in it and it is about my height. I had several cuts. After 6:30, we got up and go home. We took a bath and ate some noodles. We went to our neighbor’s house to watch TV. At 9:00, we went back to our house to sleep.
Day 2
Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008
Today I woke up early and played my mother’s cell phone. Grandma found a sea urchin and I ate it. We went down the hill to eat breakfast. We went to another beach to pick seashells. But the road was closed. So we went to eat lunch. We bought some black tea, because my aunt is coming to Liouciou. After they came, we went back to our home waiting for low tide. After it is low tide, we went to pick seashells, sea anemone, sea urchin, starfish, and crabs. Then we went to jump in the water. I don’t think it’s good to do anymore, because the water is shallow. At 5:30, we took a bath and Mom took us to a restaurant to eat dinner. I ordered steak and inside it has noodles. It was very good that we went to the drink shop to buy chocolate milk tea for me. Today my mom decided to sleep in the neighbor’s house, so we brushed our teeth very early. We watched TV until 10:30 and went to sleep.
Day 3
Thursday, July 3rd, 2008
Today we woke up early and went down to eat breakfast. We went to Beauty Cave. Inside it has many caves. We searched almost every one of them. When we get out, we were standing at the entrance! So we have to walk a long way to get our motorcycles. Mom let us to eat Slurpee. At 11:00am we took our suitcases, and went to take the 12:00pm boat back. After we went back to Donggang, we take our grandmother home and we drive back to our home.

Liangshan Waterfall
Sunday, June 29th, 2008
Today we went to Liangshan Waterfall for a swim. Liangshan is in Maolin. The waterfall was very cool. So we went to play water there. But up the waterfall was dangerous. We went down to play. Dad found a game. He grabbed some stones and he floated! Thank goodness, the water was shallow, so I learned it too. We were very careful that because there we can fall down. There are some sharp stones so I got a few scratches on my skin. At noon, we went up and ate sushi and noodles. We went down again, and I was interested at the downfall game. At about 2:00, we got up. We went to take a shower. It is like a waterfall and you can wash there without been seen. We went back home at the end of the day. It was fun.

Mirror Reflections
Today is Wednesday, June 20, 2007
I think that sand has reflection because glass is made of sand. I know this by looking "1001 cool freaky facts".
Some things have glass but they still don't reflect. I said: "That's weird!"
One day I saw a clock but it is a little weird. If the time is 8:50, the reflection is 3:10. Because it is the reflection!
